Literature
As with nearly all of my studies from life, no white paint has been used in the production of this sketch. To work as quickly as possible, I draw the animal in some detail directly onto a stark white gesso ground. Then, I put in layers of light ochres, yellows and blacks-barely enough to cover the pencil work, but with enough colour to establish the form and presence of a tiger on the painted surface. Working this way, the image slowly emerges like a photographic print in the developing tray. I hope that at least some of the energy of these huge cats is apparent in this painting. In such a study of rest and calm there should, however, be no doubt that if the animal were to awaken, whatever was around and about would need to rethink its position! - Raymond Ching
