In 1978, Richard Killeen began the cut-out paintings for which he is best known. Each is made up of shaped and painted aluminium pieces. The images he uses for his 'cut-outs' refer to countless cultures, literature, hieroglyphics, symbols, spaces, and temperaments. Despite their appropriation from real life, the shapes and silhouettes can verge on the abstract or merge into fantastical familiarity.
