Literature
Artist of Maori motifs and subjects. Born in England. Took up journalism and freelance writing. Member of NZ Archaeologists' Society. Has worked in industrial design and as a political cartoonist for several radical magazines. Of Mangere. See also biographical article in `Art New Zealand', no 49 (Summer 1988/89), pages 44-45. Served in the Korean War (1950-1953) as British soldier in combined Commonweath forces. Was a prisoner of war in North Korean and Chinese camps for several years, and was repatriated to Britain after his release. Shortly after, he emigrated to New Zealand. Became deeply interested in Maori art and history, visting many marae. Wrote several books on Maori art and history, including 'Maori Folk Art'. Active in protest against nuclear war, apartheid, and the Vietnam War; often creating cartoons and protest paintings.
